A Review on Tractor Loader Backhoe Basics

Tractor Loader Backhoes are very versatile machines and can be used for a variety of tasks: construction, small demolitions, light transportation of building materials, digging holes/excavation, landscaping, breaking asphalt and paving roads. Tractor loader backhoes are popular among municipalities and universities because of the amount of jobs they can be used for. Backhoes can also be equipped with a variety of attachments like breakers, augers, grapples and a variety of other attachments.

Because the design of a tractor loader backhoe is intrinsically top-heavy and the swinging weight of the backhoe could cause the vehicle to tip, most backhoe loaders use hydraulic outriggers, only at the back when digging and lower the loader bucket for additional stability. Their relatively small frame and precise control make tractor loader backhoes very useful and common in urban engineering projects such as construction and repairs in areas too small for larger equipment.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind when operating a backhoe:

  • Always inspect your jobsite for hidden obstacles, drop-offs and soft ground conditions. Driving over these obstacles could cause the machine to overturn or bump you off the machine.
  • Travel slow and always carry the bucket low if possible to give you the best visibility and stability. Only raise the bucket when it is necessary to dump a load. Remember, the higher the bucket is the more unstable the machine is.
  • When lifting round objects such as pipes or logs to keep the bucket low. If you raise the bucket/forks too high or tip it too far back, the objects could roll backward and down the loader arms and onto you.
  • If you are working on a slope, prevent tipping the machine by dumping the bucket uphill. If you dump downhill, swing slowly to avoid tipping.
  • Before you start driving the machine or any machine, be sure to check all safety devices are in good working condition. These include seat belts, ROPS (roll over protection system), lights, mirrors and backup alarm.

The versatility of tractor loader backhoes make them one of the most popular urban construction vehicles. If you follow these safety tips tractor loader backhoes can be a great piece of equipment to own and operate.
