Testing Begins in Canada on the New Supercube trailer

The Ontario Transport agency has approved the testing of Walmart Canada’s “Supercube” trailer on Ontario roadways. This new 60′ trailer will allow the retailer to ship 30% more product than a standard 53′ trailer. The testing will take place for 18 months, but will have some restrictions imposed. Walmart Canada was granted permission to operate up to five approved Supercube trailers and said it plans to operate four Supercubes in Ontario, which will each be pulled by Freightliner Argosy tractors.

To be elligible to participate, carriers must carry $5 million of libility insurance and cannot have a conditional or unsatisfactory rating. Drivers are also required to notify MOT of all origins and destinations and must also identify all locations where the Supercube trailer will be operated a week prior to operation.

According to the agency’s website, drivers must be pre-trained to operate the Supercube and must also have at least 5 years of tractor trailer driving experience. During the trial, the Supercube will be limited to transporting retail goods destined for retail industry only.

Along with the freatures listed above, the Supercube will also be equipped with many new safety features including lane departure warnings, video-based safety and telemetry and automatically generates risk management reports. The Supercube will also be equipped with back-up cameras, fuel saving resistance tires and skirts and a roll stability system to prevent rollovers.
