Experience Counts For Active Duty Men and Women Applying for CDL
In an effort to help returning service men and women find jobs in New York State, Govenor Andrew Cuomo has introduced a new campaign called “Experience Counts”. This program allows the New York State DMV to waive the commercial drivers license road test for active duty military and New York National Guard members for up to 90 days following their discharge.
Experience Counts would eliminate the CDL road test requirement and $40 fee, but applicants must still take the written test and pay that $10 fee. This is just one way of thanking active duty military and New York National Guard members for their service, and recognizing that the skills they learned in the military are transferable to civilian jobs. In todays economy, returning military members are having a hard time finding jobs. With Experience Counts, it will be a little easier.
Additional Requirements:
- Applicants must be or have been regularly employed within the last 90 days in a military position that requires the operation of a commercial motor vehicle.
- Must have operated a vehicle that is similar to a civilian commercial motor vehicle for at least 2 years immediately preceding discharge from the military.
- Applicant must also prove that they have not had their drivers license suspended, revoked, cancelled or denied within the last 4 years.
Interested applicants are required to fill out a “CDL Certification for Military Waiver of Skills Test” form available at any NYS DMV office.
